Student Spotlight: Sophie Thien, From Kuala Lumpur to Vancouver

New student Sophie Thien is originally from Kuala Lumpur and Taipei. She immigrated to Vancouver in 2006 and has called the west coast home ever since! When not spending time with Milo - her Maltese-Shih Tzu mix - she is researching historical fashion and sketching.

We asked Sophie more about her journey and why The Cut features so prominently in her future career path.

What is the full name of the course(s) that you are taking at The Cut?

My full name is Sophie Thien and I will be taking the pattern-making program with The Cut this coming May. I am taking this program because I have always been passionate and curious about the fashion industry. I always thought that I would be more interested in the marketing side of fashion, but it turns out that I want to try designing my own pieces to add my own personal touch.

Why did you originally decide to apply at The Cut for your education?

I decided to apply at The Cut to hone my skills in pattern making because The Cut offers small class sizes where teachers are able to help students individually and focus on their needs. I think that this would be beneficial for my journey in fashion because I definitely need guidance when it comes to sewing.

What skills are you looking forward to learning this semester?

I am looking forward to learning how to piece patterns together. I believe that this would be a challenging program for me since I have always found myself struggling when it comes to making my own pieces. I want to take this opportunity to properly learn how to pattern make so that I can turn my pieces into a reality. I also plan on self-teaching myself about natural dyes and their process.

What are your plans upon graduating?

I plan to start my own line or go into the costume and film industry. I hope that I am able to do both.

What excites you the most about 2022?

What excites me the most about 2022 is definitely being able to get started on my fashion journey through The Cut. I applied for the pattern-making program in January and have been looking forward to it ever since. I also am very excited about future travel plans since I have not been able to travel for the past three years. 2022 looks very promising so far!

Who are some of your favourite fashion designers or creators?

My favourite designer would be the self-made New York-based Danielle Guizio. Not only do I admire her collection that highlights thoughtful colour palettes, well-placed cut-outs and ties, but I also look up to her work ethic because she has inspired me to follow my own dreams and not stop until I achieve them.
