Professional Advice from an Industry Expert

What is your best piece of advice for students going into fashion school?

Pay as much attention in your technical pattern and sewing classes as your design and illustration. I find students are often less interested in the technical classes than the creative. To be a well rounded designer it is extremely helpful to understand the entire design process. It will empower design ability, and create more opportunities for career placement. The more skills you arm yourself with the better your employment potential.

What is your best piece of advice for getting into the industry after school?

Hit the ground running. You have to create opportunities for yourself. Take an internship, continue to learn, take knowledge from industry experts. PAY YOUR DUES!!!!!

In your eyes what makes a great fashion student?

A strong and individual design point of view is critical. Work ethic. Passion.

What's a common misconception about fashion schools and the fashion industry?

That a design school will give you all the skills and aptitudes to nail a head design job straight after graduation. That working in the fashion industry is glamorous.

What do you love most about being in the fashion industry?

I love the creativity, diversity, relationship building.

What was/is the stand-out moment in your career?

A stand-out moment for me was when I got a preview with the buyer from The ROOM (Hudson's Bay) and they ordered. Still having a career after 15-years is really my stand-out moment.

And there you have it, key advice from an industry expert!
