In our second release of Lessons from Liza, The Cut Fashion Academy owner Liza Deyrmenjian talks to us about the importance of networking. You may have heard the saying ‘it’s not what you know, it is who you know’ that makes the difference. That statement applies in so many industries but in fashion, it is only 50% correct. You can know dozens of big-name mover and shakers but if you are not bringing something to the table, they are not going to let you sit down!

Why is networking important?

It is important to meet people, tell people what you do, and what you have to offer them. People network in different ways but make no mistake everyone is networking.  People introduce you to other people.  A referral is the most successful way of getting clients.  For someone to recommend or refer you - you need to mix with them, network!


What are your top 3 tips for networking?

a) Be yourself. Believe in yourself.   

b) If you are not a salesperson, don't do the hard sell on yourself.  

c) Be real, be who you are - it works


Advice for networking in the current climate?

Wear a mask!  I am loving Google Meet and Zoom - in fact, I think more people are networking now seeing as they can do it from home, and they are bored, so why not mix and mingle. Not a bad thing at all and who knows, you may really connect with someone!


In your experience mentoring people, what do you look for in a mentee?

Someone who is open to learning and who is not looking only for compliments.  For me, the people that look for my mentorship are wanting to start a business and I am very direct because if I am not they will waste and lose money. I love the young students that come for portfolio prep, or start their fashion career and are hungry to learn. Also, the main thing I look for in a mentee is someone who is considerate. I will give my everything to someone who has consideration for others. Open any door they ask, introduce them to people in any country to help them advance if they are ...considerate. I don't work or mentor entitled people.  The frustration involved is never worth the effort.
