This integrated hands-on course will introduce you to the business of product development and apparel manufacturing. Top industry professionals will teach you how to bring your product from concept to completion.

 
 

You will learn the start-up of product development, including understanding textile science, how to build prototypes, and how to identify basic garment construction techniques. You will prepare industry-standard technical specification packages and learn how to source material and labour, local and abroad.

Costing structures and production planning are emphasized. In a global economy, production of a product line must be executed with business profit in mind. Learn the skills to navigate the complex business of product development and production to further develop your business reach or improve your existing small business profile.

Industry Introduction

  • Introduction to the various roles in the fashion industry.
  • Understand how all roles work together in bringing products to market.

    • Building A Technical Specification Package

  • Introduction to building a spec sheet.
  • Use of software to produce industry-standard technical documents.
  • Understand how to prepare technical specification packages.

    Construction

  • Overview / review of different seam constructions.
  • Identify construction details in a spec sheet.
  • Overview of trim items often found in apparel products.
  • BOM (Bill of Materials) are defined.
  • Build a BOM, estimating yields, minimum orders, etc.
  • Understand and prepare a production plan / calendar.
  • Identify fabric and trim lead times with suppliers.
  • Understand lab dips; color matching, and DTM (Dye to Match) trims.

    • Production & Planning

  • Understand basic factory flow.
  • Understand and prepare costing, estimating yields.
  • Produce a production plan using strict timelines.
  • Understand the role of finance.

    • Sourcing

  • Understand the role of sourcing and determine best methods of use.
  • Learn about the pros and cons of factory allocation.
  • Learn how to confirm material sourcing.
  • Understand flowchart that runs between PD, Sourcing Managers and Design
  • Using learned techniques, locate one overseas apparel manufacturer to produce a total of two samples, using tech packs created.

    • Prototype Buiding

  • Learn how to problem solving in manufacturing.
  • Be able to identify effective methods for tracking changes.
  • Producing a run – either sample or production, and what are the differences.
  • QC – working with production to identify and uphold quality standards.
  • Confirm and release approved tech packs.
  • Using tech packs, produce three samples at domestic factory

    • Textile Science

  • Textile fibers, yarn classification and numbering, texturing, spun yarn manufacturing and yarn testing.
  • Knitting and weaving fundamentals, and nonwovens.
  • Fabric preparation and fabric finishing.
  • Color – dyestuffs, pigments, digital and traditional printing methods.
  • Get to know where to source fabric.

    • Presentation

  • Final project: Total of 4 manufactured garments, two garments domestically made and 2 garments internationally made.
  • Students will present their final presentation to their peers, and the course instructor.

    With a distinguished career in the fashion industry that has spanned over thirty years, Liza Deyrmenjian is renowned internationally as an innovator, creator, and entrepreneur. Specialties include her work with emerging designers and brands. Clients have enjoyed features in iconic fashion magazines such as WWD, InStyle, Glamour, and Harper’s Bazaar, and she has personally coached various participants and winners participating in Project Runway. A visionary with a talent for mentorship, Liza has ushered many young designers to success, even opening the doors for a 13-year-old protegee’s fashion line onto the coveted racks in Nordstrom department stores.
